League City Regional Chamber of Commerce has Moved to a New Location!

League City resident Hazel Henry retired from her job with the City of League City, having worked as the Event Coordinator for the Johnnie Arolfo Civic Center and League City Recreation Center for 22 years.
As the event coordinator, Henry oversaw planning and management, including internal and external events. With experience planning exhibitions and large businesses events, as well as large and small private events, Hazel saw the planning of many events such as Public Meetings, Homeowners Association Meetings, Seminars, Trainings, Workshops, Trade Shows, Awards Ceremonies, Graduation Ceremonies/Parties, Weddings/Anniversaries, Birthday Parties, Family Reunions, Quinceanera~, Business Luncheons/Meetings, Church Services, Jazzercise Classes, and Dance Classes.
Henry’s 22 years of work as an Event Coordinator for the city also included:
Creating event proposals for clients requirements and presented proposals by deadlines.
Maintained a working relationship with all vendors.
Delegated event planning tasks to other staff members when necessary.
Demonstrated to clients a strong understanding and knowledge of venues, and offered and took clients on tours of venues possibilities.
Issued invoices and collected payments in a timely manner.
Managed and oversee events on the day of, Included problem-solving, welcomed guests, directed set-up, communicated with staff, and organized vendors.
Anticipated and planned different scenarios, and planned multiple events at once.
During Henry’s earlier years with the city, she worked with other city departments.
“First I collected water utility payments for the Utility Billing Department,” Henry said. “I then worked several months later with the City Building Department where I learned building codes to scheduled staff daily work order tasks. It was gratifying and delightful.”
Henry said she worked a temporary position with the Facilities Maintenance Department for two short weeks as their Facility Rental-Coordinator, impressing the department with her performance. Henry was offered a permanent full time position, to her excitement.
“This was my dream job to connect on a wide spectrum with the public,” Henry said. “I was later promoted to a dual position as Facility Rental-Coordinator/Facility Custodial Supervisor. I managed five full-time and two part-time employees while assisting the Facilities Maintenance team and daily work orders log/assignments.”
Hazel routinely oversaw all of the City's Carpool internal reservations.
“I had minimal hands on involvement with the Emergency Management Team; was responsible for getting wind speeds and wind directions Report daily from the National Weather Services,” Henry said. “This vital information would be available and ready for HazMat/Fire Department when necessary.”
Henry has always had a passion for helping others, saying this was what drew her to the job 22 years ago.
“Since I’m so passionate about helping others and making someone’s day a little brighter, this was the perfect job to work one on one with clients,” Henry said. “My goal [was] to make their “Dream Event” a reality and help my clients build an everlasting memorable experience that will last a lifetime. That’s precious! How can you not feel great about that?”
Henry said her greatest memory during her time working with the city was in August 2017, which she called the dawn of Hurricane Harvey. Hazel highlighted how the League City employees came together as one showing unity and heroism in time of need.
“City Hall was converted temporarily into a emergency Call Center to
immediately help citizens with where to seek help and refuge,” Henry said. “Providing a expedient network for open shelters, distributors center, Red Cross hotline and FEMA. The Public Work Department, Facilities Maintenance Department, and Information Technology Departments all worked tirelessly to restore our beloved city back into full operations. The Johnnie Arolfo Civic Center was converted into a shelter for our citizens; a collection site for donations drop off and the parking lot for water distributions for employees and citizens. The League City Recreation Center was converted to FEMA for several months. Our custodian staff worked diligently to ensure the building was cleaned and restocked daily. Hometown Heroes Park Recreation Department opened their doors for an on site shelter and daily meals to our citizens; this operation was also managed by Parks staff. (Just a fine job!)The city's staff put our own personal disasters aside, rolled up our sleeves, and said ‘What next?’”
Henry proclaimed “WE ARE LEAGUE CITY STRONG” when reflecting on this memory.
Now, having retired from her position with League City, Henry said she will miss the city employees the most, describing them as wonderful and dedicated.
“I had the tremendous opportunity to have worked closely with the most compassionate, kind-hearted, professional, loyal and just undoubtedly down-to-earth good people that I am proud to call my friends,” Henry said. “It’s incredible having the opportunity and privilege to be presently a part of their lives and seeing the joy of faces light up when all their hours or months of dedicated hard work and meticulous planning becomes a definite reality!”
Having retired, Henry now plans to revisit her previous career as a licensed vocational nurse.
“The needs are great since the COVID-19 [pandemic],” Henry said. “I plan to use my expertise in the medical area where needed. My other plans are more personal and still developing.”
Hazel had encouraging advice to give to the next person to become the event coordinator for the city.
“Have great communication skills and an outgoing personality and the ability to multitask,” Henry said. “[You] need to listen and understand the clients’ needs. Simply Relax, enjoy, and importantly have fun!”
